Zimbabwe set to draft a new migration policy

Harare, Zimbabwe

In line with priorities of the Government of Zimbabwe (GoZ), the Zimbabwean Department of Immigration plans to draft a new national migration policy. ACBC’s technical assistance was requested to conduct an assessment of the current situation, including analysis of the existing legal framework, entry/exit procedures, migrant registration, capacity building and infrastructure needs.

From 28 April to 2 May 2014, the ACBC met with relevant stakeholders from the Department of Immigration and the Ministry of Labor, and conducted site visits to migrant reception centers. Based on the discussions with the government, the new migration policy is to take into account Zimbabwe’s national border management and labor migration priorities, facilitate tourism, as well as promote trade and investment. Particular attention will be paid to border information systems; Zimbabwe already uses IOM’s Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) at selected border crossings and is keen to further extend the coverage.

The ACBC will work closely with GoZ and IOM Zimbabwe to support the policy drafting process.
