The IOM ACBC Info Sheet 2024 provides an overview of the International Organization for Migration's African Capacity Building Centre (ACBC). Established in 2009 at the request of IOM's African Member States, the ACBC aims to strengthen migration management capacities across the African continent. The center focuses on three main pillars: Capacity Building in Migration Management, Migration Research and Development, and Migration Advocacy and Partnerships
The ACBC is located in Moshi, Tanzania, near Mount Kilimanjaro, and offers both face-to-face and virtual training courses through IOM’s ECampus online platform. The center is equipped with modern training technology, including interactive flat panel screens and videoconferencing equipment, and features a forensic document laboratory for detecting fraudulent documents
Since its inception, the ACBC has supported over 8,500 migration practitioners through training, border assessments, and study visits, and has facilitated more than 400 workshops, consultations, and dialogues for IOM’s African Member States. The center collaborates with various regional entities, including the African Union Commission, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD), and the East African Community (EAC)
The ACBC also develops manuals, curricula, and innovative tools to support migration management, such as the "Protecting the Human Rights of Migrants" course and the "Passport Examination Procedures Manual 2nd Edition"
