The ACBC was established in 2009 at the request of IOM’s African Member States to help build migration management capacities on the Continent, promote comprehensive migration governance, and facilitate a diverse range of migration and border management projects and training courses. Since that time, the ACBC has trained more than 8,500 migration practitioners across the African continent and beyond, as well as providing other forms technical support to all 54 of IOM’s African Member States, including migration policy curricula and operational manuals, needs and border assessments, study visits, and legislative and policy guidance.
Recent examples include new courses in international law and human rights protection, as well as the ACBC’s International Migration Law course (IML-ACDP), which is scheduled twice a year in English and in French, alongside the complementary e-learning course and digital library for legal researchers.
The ACBC has also institutionalized the Young African Professionals Programme (YAPP); a training programme for talented, early-career IOM staff working in their own countries to develop their training and facilitation skills and gain international experience to better support Member States across a multiplicity of migration management themes and languages spoken in Africa. Due to its success, a parallel programme has been established by IOM’s Staff Development and Learning (SDL) Unit for IOM staff in Asia and the Pacific
